Statistics of Police Brutality

Why is police brutality a problem?

Often times, most conservatives interpretate the deaths of individuals like George Floyed to be due to a few "bad apples" and individual cop racism. Yet, the United States has slowly implemented a network of systematic racism and opression that negatively affects people of color. Rather than police brutality being percieved as a problem of individual racism, the root of the problem lies in structural racism. For instance, black people are 3x more likely to be killed compared to white people. To counter this problem, the Black Lives Matter movement was initiated.

Although black people only make up approximately 13% of the U.S. population, black people accounted for nearly a third of the victims of the police, demonstrating how it is far more likely for a black person to be shot by the police compared to a white person.
